I was browsing Ask Slashdot and stumbled upon this question:
“Whenever I install a fresh operating system on my computer, I immediately grab a handful of programs that I simply must have. After that, I generally wait and install other pieces of software as I need them.
“It can be time-consuming and risky to install and evaluate every single option. So, I’m curious: what pieces of software do you find the most useful and reliable?”
What software should be installed on a fresh computer?
What software can you not live without?
This is my take on the topic. I find it easier to avoid reinstalling the computer in the future through Install Monitor. It is a great choice as it helps me deal with instability caused by bad software installers/uninstallers. It also helps to make sure I can maintain the system’s performance. In fact Install Monitor works best when you install it on a clean system. It will help to maintain your system’s reliability and performance.
So what software should be installed on a fresh computer? It is undoubtedly Mirekusoft Install Monitor.
The next version of Mirekusoft Install Monitor 2.0 has been released. It includes several new features and performance and reliability and usability improvements. For more details see here. One of the best ways to improve pc performance is to reduce the amount of running programs. This can often result in a significant improvement to your PC or laptop system performance. Mirekusoft Install Monitor provides several useful features for improving your computer’s performance. (Image below take from Stuart Miles/freedigitalphotos.net)
Improve PC Performance by Reducing the Amount of Running Programs
Introducing Two New Features of Install Monitor
Startup Monitor helps by allowing you to reduce the amount of programs that start automatically. Many programs start automatically when they do not need to. Also some programs continue to run after you exit them. However using two new features in Mirekusoft Install Monitor 2.0 it is possible to further reduce the amount of programs that are running at any time. These features help to combat programs that are always running even if they do not need to.
Start a Program from the Program List
How Start Up Monitor Works
One of these feature is the ability to start a program from the program list and is just one of the changes from Mirekusoft Install Monitor 1.1. The right pane no longer shows shortcuts that can allow you start a program. However by right-clicking a program, you are now provided with a “Start” menu option that allows you start that program.
How does this work?
Technically what happens is that Install Monitor will try to figure out the correct shortcut to start based on installed shortcuts. In most cases, it will automatically and correctly guess the program to start. If it can not guess it, it will present you with a list of shortcuts similar to the right pane in Version 1.1.
- Works with Startup Monitor to start any background services required for the program, which is similar to the trigger start services feature in Windows 7.
- Provides another way to start programs on Windows 8 due to the missing Start Menu on the desktop.
- Alternative to the searchable Start Menu on Windows Vista and Windows 7.
TIP:This feature can be useful for programs that you rarely use but need to run every so often.
Ensure the Program Stops Running After Exiting
When you exit the program you can also use the Program Process Viewer to make sure it is no longer running and all related processes are shutdown. When used together the result is:
- Less processes running
- More responsive computer
For instance some of my applications that I use are run infrequently. Instead of having the program always starting I disable it with Startup Monitor and then when I need to run it I start it from the program list.
The right pane in Install Monitor 1.1 shows shortcuts for the current program.
In Install Monitor 2.0 you can start programs from the right-click menu in the program list.
This post will serve as a brief introduction to the next version of Mirekusoft Install Monitor. There are several new features as well as performance and reliability improvements under the hood. It also has several bug fixes and user interface improvements.
Improved Changes for Better Usability
- The user interface has been improved to make it easier to use and more responsive.
- The program bar which used to contain a drop down list of all programs has been replaced with a combo box and tracks the recent selections.
- The Program Tree bar has been added as another way to navigate. There’s more information about programs available including usage information.
- The speed of the programs list has been improved and clicking on items is much faster. To make the list faster some of the information has now been moved to a program properties dialog.
- The contents pane has been changed to make it easier to see what is installed by location. You can also launch programs directly from the list. There have also been changes to the uninstaller to make it more efficient and able to handle files that are in use.
There are also several new features that include:

In previous blog entries we have talked about the issues of software rot and bloat which are common issues with software on Windows. Many times an uninstall programs will simply crash or fail to remove all the installed items. The user is often left to guess what will happen when they run the uninstaller. Likewise it is not always obvious what effect installing a program has on the system. These situations can make a user feel powerless. To help combat this situation I am announcing the first release of Install Monitor.
Why was Install Monitor developed?
Install Monitor was developed to give control back to users. It shows you exactly what a program is doing to your system. This makes it easier to remove the program if you choose. It also gives you information that allows you to compare programs to see how big or bloated they are.
How does it work?
Install Monitor works by monitoring the applications that get installed on your system and tracking what file and registry resources they create. The monitored program can then be more easily managed. It works similar to Programs and Features in Windows. However it provides you with much more information. For instance after you uninstall a program you can see exactly what the program left behind.
More About Install Monitor
An important point to remember is that Install Monitor is a tool like Sysinternals Process Monitor or Windows Registry Editor. It tries to prevent information in a useful way but ultimately the user has to make the decision if he wants to remove something. Consequently if used incorrectly something that is important may be removed. Also programs that were installed without monitoring have less information available.
Compatible with Windows 7
Install Monitor runs on both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows Vista (SP1 and later) and Windows 7. It is free for personal and home use. For business/corporate use contact us by email.
This is just the first release. Future releases will make it easier and safer to use and more reliable and efficient. They will also provide more information and better support for unmonitored programs. Future posts will provide more information about how to get most use out of Install Monitor. Install Monitor is available on the download page.
